  • Word Search

    To find a word, type it inside the search bar and tap Search.

    Handwritten Kanji Recognition

    JEDict implements an original handwriting recognition engine providing a robust recognition of all 6355 kanji characters. An important feature - recognition does not depend on the stroke drawing order. When drawing a kanji, make sure you have no extra lines. Pressing the Find button will display 4 most relevant kanji.

    A single tap on a kanji will display the kanji related info.
    Double tap on a kanji appends it to the local clipboard (visible in toolbar) that may contain a few kanji characters. Use a Clear button to erase the whole drawing, and Undo button to erase the last drawn stroke. Pressing a Back button sends the local clipboard text to the search engine.

    Kanji Search by Graphemes

  • The kanji are found by graphemes;
  • The graphemes are found by stroke count.

    Example. Let's find kanji consisted of three components:

    楽 = 木 + 白 +

    To find a radical 木, tap segment 4 to display a table with 4-strokes graphemes.
    Find and select the radical 木. The 木 will appear in the topmost grapheme filter. The table will be updated to show all allowed stroke numbers and radicals. Simultaneously kanji table will be filled with the most common kanji containing component 木.
    To find the next radical, tap segment 5 and select a grapheme 白. It will go to the top filter, while the kanji table will be filled with the kanji containing two found components. At this stage your device screen will show the following:

    The first kanji in the row is the 楽 we were looking for. In most cases 2-3 components are enough to find a kanji. A single tap on a kanji will display the kanji related info.
    A double tap on a kanji will append it to the local clipboard (visible in toolbar) that may contain a few kanji characters. The content of the local clipboard is transferred to search page when Back button is pressed. To undo the last selection press the first cell marked with ⏎. To remove one grapheme from the filter, tap on a corresponding cell.

    Word Lists

    JEDict has 4 JLPT lists provided by www.PlaySay.com. JLPT list is selected using a toolbar top menu. The words can be presented in original order or sorted by Japanese or English alphabet. These sorting options are selected from Sort menu.

    A user can create the user word list. The entries can be imported to the list either from the JLPT lists or from a search result page. To export an entry to the user list, mark the corresponding text block and tap the List popup menu command. To delete a word from the list use the corresponding gesture.
    The list file (wordList.txt) resides in ~/Documents/  folder and is accesible from File Sharing section in iTunes.
